What Visitors Need to Know

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Hawaiʻi Island, and a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, and Maui Counties, as Hurricane Lala moves through the Hawaiian Islands. A Flood Watch is in effect statewide with heavy rain, dangerous surf, and the potential for flooding expected through the weekend.

Know Before You Go

Flights: Dozens of flights have been canceled, and some cancellations are expected to continue tomorrow; confirm your flight status directly with your airline before heading to the airport as airport facilities are not equipped to provide shelter during the storm. Visitors should continue to shelter in place. Per the State of Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (DOT), Hilo International Airport and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) are closed today. The DOT expects to resume operations at both airports tomorrow.

Getting Around: The DOT advises residents and visitors to stay off the roads as much as possible due to high winds and potential flash flooding conditions on all islands.

In the Water: Dangerous surf and storm surge are expected statewide. Stay out of the ocean, especially along windward and southern shores.

Conditions by Island

Hawaiʻi Island is under a Hurricane Warning. Winds are peaking on the island now, with improvement expected overnight as the storm weakens and moves west of the island. Follow all instructions from hotel staff and county emergency management, and stay off the roads as much as possible.

  • Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is closed today. Kīlauea Military Camp and Volcano House remain open, for registered guests only.
  • ʻImiloa Astronomy Center is closed today and tomorrow.
  • Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park is closed until further notice.
  • Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park is closed until further notice.
  • Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site is closed until further notice.


Maui, Lānaʻi & Molokaʻi are under a Tropical Storm Warning. Expect heavy rain and rough surf.

  • Haleakalā National Park is closed today. Sunrise reservations are canceled.


Oʻahu is under a Tropical Storm Warning. Expect heavy rain and rough surf.

  • Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is closed through 19 August for previously scheduled construction, unrelated to the storm.
  • All City and County of Honolulu parks and botanical gardens are closed until further notice.


Kauaʻi is under a Tropical Storm Warning. Expect heavy rain and rough surf.

  • Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park, including Kalalau Trail, Nuʻalolo Kai, and Miloliʻi Beach, are closed today. Overnight camping on Kalalau Trail was suspended starting Friday.
  • All state parks are closed until further notice.
  • Polihale State Park is closed until further notice.
  • The Haʻena Shuttle is closed today and tomorrow.
