Welcome to Honuaʻula
(Wailea/Mākena)
Moku are traditional land divisions used throughout the Hawaiian Islands for centuries. Each moku has smaller land divisions, like ahupua‘a (land division usually extending from the uplands to the sea). These traditional land divisions are reflections of ancestral values of resource management and sustainability. They continue to guide us toward more regenerative ways to enjoy our island home.
THE MOKU OF HONUA‘ULA
The moku of Honua‘ula includes two of the more well-recognized visitor areas of Maui: Wailea and Mākena. With a wealth of eateries, shopping, and white-sand beaches, it’s easy to fill your day with things to do and sights to see.
Drive to Mākena State Park and enjoy Oneloa Beach, also known as “Big Beach.” Depending on the swell, the shore break at Oneloa can be hazardous, so be sure to check with the Maui County lifeguard on duty for advice on how best to enjoy the ocean and stay safe.
